May Sr. joined the Confederate Army at the start of the Civil War.
He was one of the organizers of the Co "B" 23rd Regiment Infantry of
Tennessee Volunteers CSA in Lawrence County, Tennessee. He entered
service as a 1st Lieutenant and soon achieved the rank of Captain.
After he was in the April 6, 1862 battle of Shiloh (Pittsburg
Landing) in Southwestern Tennessee (Hardin and McNairy Counties).
After Shiloh Daniel left the Infantry to join the Cavalry with
Nathan Bedford Forrest. At the time he was captured he was
officially listed as being in Company D, Biffle's 19th Regiment
Tennessee Cavalry. On November 17,1963 during a battle close to
Lawrenceburg, Tennessee Daniel was captured and sent as a prisoner
of war to Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio were he remained until May
10, 1865 when he took the Oath of Allegiance to the United States
and was release from prison. He returned to Tennessee.
