Civil War "Capt" of Forrests Rangers. He joined COl. Forrest at Ft. Donelson, then beleaguered by Grants Army. He lead a succesful charge upon the Federal troops and fell at the head of his comment. His body was brought back to Memphis and buried with distinguished honors.  Find A Grave

United States Civil War Soldiers Index, 1861-1865," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FSNX-7MW : 4 December 2014), Charles May, Captain, Company C, 3rd Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry (Forrest's) (18th Battalion) (26th Battalion) (Balch's Battalion) (McDonald's Battalion), Confederate; citing NARA microfilm publication M231 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 28; FHL microfilm 880,082.

Forrest had returned from Kentucky to find the ranks already swelling. Charles May had recruited another ninety man company he called the Forrest Rangers. The Forrest and Boone Rangers went into camp and soon were joined by similar units from Texas, Alabama, and Kentucky. The Alabama companies commander, David C. Kelley became impressed with Forrest’s ability to slice through military red tape. And later went on to say that his persistent watchfulness enabled him to accomplish what I desired ahead of any officer with whom I had to contend, except when I came in contact with the requisitions of N.B. Forrest. Instrumental in getting three other Alabama units to sign on, Kelley was elected major, Forrest second in command, in a 650 man battalion of eight cavalry companies. Half of these troopers were armed with double barreled shotguns they had brought from home.
