Forrest had returned from Kentucky to find the ranks already swelling. Charles May had recruited another ninety man company he called the Forrest Rangers. The Forrest and Boone Rangers went into camp and soon were joined by similar units from Texas, Alabama, and Kentucky. The Alabama companies commander, David C. Kelley became impressed with Forrest’s ability to slice through military red tape. And later went on to say that his persistent watchfulness enabled him to accomplish what I desired ahead of any officer with whom I had to contend, except when I came in contact with the requisitions of N.B. Forrest. Instrumental in getting three other Alabama units to sign on, Kelley was elected major, Forrest second in command, in a 650 man battalion of eight cavalry companies. Half of these troopers were armed with double barreled shotguns they had brought from home. |
