The Mays who of  Maury County are mostly descendants of Albert Cleveland May (May 104-04).  Albert Cleveland died in Giles County in 1933.

Geneva Irene  MAY 104-04-03, Raymond Carl  MAY 104-04-05 and  Richard Franklin  MAY 104-04-06 moved to Columbia Tennessee in Maury County.

 

Raymond Carl started "R C May Jewelers" in Columbia. R.C along with his wife Margaret and son Carl built the store into a well known and highly respected business. Their neon sign was also known and often photographed. Click on the picture to the right. This was emailed to me.

     Carl and his wife Wanda owned the store until it closed.

Mrs. Margaret Wiley May, 83, former co-owner of R.C. May Jewelers and resident of Carol Drive, died Tuesday, October 5, 2004 at Maury Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Thursday, at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Wayne Hardison and Bill Tankersley officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens.
The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 4-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

The Maury County native was the daughter of the late D.B. Wiley and Maude Dycus Wiley. On October 12, 1946 she married R.C. May who preceded her in death June 27, 1998. Mrs. May was a graduate of Hampshire High School and a member of Northview Church of Christ.
Survivors include two sons, Carl W. (Wanda) May and Al May both of Columbia; five grandchildren; David Monteith (Crystal) May of Culleoka, Carla Elizabeth May, Michael Benjamin May, Stacey Rene May and Allison Kaye May all of Columbia.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Sue May and Mrs. Alethea Delk.
Pallbearers will be David May, Michael May, Walter Dycus, Doug Taylor, Doug Balthaser and John Rogers.
Honorary pallbearers will be John Price, Bill Johnston, Jimmy Shelton and Elders and Deacons of Northview Church of Christ.

He attended Freed-Hardeman University for two years, where he met Wanda, and earned a Master’s degree in History from Harding University. Mr. May was a life-long Minister of the Gospel having preached at Berea Church of Christ for many years, and currently at Shipps Bend Church of Christ. Survivors include his daughter, Elizabeth (Darron) Chapman; sons, David (Crystal) May, Michael (Wendy) May; grandchildren, Megan May, Logan May, Scarlett May, Lily Woody, Sophia Chapman, Jeremy Chapman; honorary grandchildren, Sabastian Nelson, Thomas Forshee, Bradley Nelson; brother, Al (Jane) May; two nieces; and several great nieces and nephews. Wanda Monteith May: November 16, 1951 — January 17, 2015

May Jewelers on the Public Square and resident of Porter Circle, died Saturday, January 17, 2015 in Gatlinburg while on a week-end trip with her family. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Bill Watkins and Mike Bryan officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. Mrs. May was active in the work of the Berea Church of Christ and was an able and devoted assistant to her husband in his ministry of the church and God's work. She is survived by her husband, Carl Wiley May, whom she married May 20, 1972. Also surviving are her children, Elizabeth (Darron) Chapman, David (Crystal) May, and Michael May; grandchildren, Megan May, Logan May, Scarlett May, and Sophia Chapman. Serving as active pallbearers are Woody Loden, Jeff Johnston, John Price, Chris Chumley, Jeff Sherman, and Chris England. Honorary pallbearers include Frank England, Henry Chapman, Marty Tyree, Andy Pogue, Wayne Hardison, and the congregation of Berea Church of Christ.

 

Mrs. Geneva May Hamlett, 87, resident of Morningside Lane, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at NHC Hillview.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Friday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Ted Burleson, Ricky Clay and Jeremy Butt officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 4 – 8p.m. at the funeral home.

The Giles County native was the daughter of the late Albert Cleveland May and Etta Garrett May. She was married for fifty years to Robert Evans Hamlett who preceded her in death November 17, 1996. She belonged to Columbia Academy Associates for many years and was a member of West 7th Street Church of Christ where she attended the Ladies Bible Class and the Large Auditorium Class.
Survivors include her daughter, Carlene (John W.) Price of Columbia; one brother, Richard (Margaret Hyatt) May of Covington, Georgia; two granddaughters, Jill Price and Robyn Price both of Columbia; three sisters-in-law, Margaret Wiley May of Columbia, Margaret Leighton May of Lawrenceburg, Joyce Ledford Hamlett Godwin of Campbellsville; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, R.C. May, C.D. May, C.F. May, and Wilson May.
Pallbearers will be Carl May, Al May, Bill Johnston, Jim Shelton, Gary Hamlett and Phil Hamlett. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Autry, Harold Autry, Rudy Godwin, Jimmy Wilkins, Dr. Gaylon Harris and members of the Large Auditorium Class of West 7th Street Church of Christ.

Sue Carolyn May Burton May 8, 1937 - January 31, 2016

Ms. Carolyn Burton, age 78, a resident of Nashville, passed away Sunday, January 31, 2016 at St. Thomas Midtown Hospital in Nashville.A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Heritage Funeral Home in Columbia with Bro. Wesley Pattison officiating. The family will also receive friends for visitation on Saturday from 1:00 PM until the 2:00 PM service at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home of Franklin is assisting the family with arrangements. Born on May 8, 1937 in Giles County, Carolyn was the daughter of the late Tom Clifford May and the late Susie Hastings May Shelton. She worked 43 years in retail at Macy’s, formerly known as Castner Knotts. She is survived by her son: Wesley Dwayne Burton; daughters: Denise Burton and Dawn Reed; brothers: Tommy (Shelia) May, James “Bubba” (Renee) Shelton; grandchildren: Leslie (Jackie) Butler, Hollie Payton; great-grandchildren: Seirra Burton, Zach Butler, Ethan Payton; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson: Chaz Reed; and sisters: Phyllis Ann Holt and Peggy Holly.
