     John Daniel May was born in Lawrence County, Tennessee on July 6, 1879 the son of Albert Harrison May and Harriette Wisdom. John Daniel married America Tennessee “Tennie” Martin on July 22, 1900.

     Tennie was born in Lawrence County, Tennessee on June, 1882 the daughter of William Henry Martin and Martha Elende Kilpatrick.

Both daughters died as young children.

Martha Ethel died of pneumonia in 1910. Nora Mildred drowned in 1915

 

From Lawrence County, Tennessee to Stark and Shelby Counties, Ohio

     Elbert Floyd the eldest son John and Tennie was born on May 9, 1902 in Lawrence County, Tennessee. He married Ada Mae Craft on January 13, 1924 in Lawrence County, Tennessee. In 1925 they decided to move to Ohio. It was Elbert’s intension to move to the Cleveland, Ohio area. They stopped in Massillon in Stark County and decided to make their home there. Elbert died on March 3, 1943 and was buried in Massillon, Ohio.

 

     My father, Alvin Rye May was born in Lawrence County, Tennessee on October 12, 1914. He first came to Shelby County in about 1936 to do carpenter work for an insurance company. By 1938 Alvin had moved to Shelby County, Ohio permanently. Alvin married Edna Ruth Clayton on his birthday October 12, 1941. Edna was the daughter of Talmage Mallaugh Clayton and Bertha Erma Nellie Shively. Alvin worked for The Gartland Haswell Foundry Company in 1941 until the summer of 1942. By 1949 Alvin was an independent livestock dealer and continued he in the livestock business until failing health forced him to stop in October 1982. Alvin died on August 14, 1988 and was buried in the Cedar Point Cemetery in Pasco, Ohio.

 

     Clifford Ellis May was born in Lawrence County, Tennessee on December 25, 1917. He came to Shelby County, Ohio to work with his brother Alvin in 1936. Clifford died on December 3, 1949 and was buried in the May Cemetery in Lawrence County, Ohio. Clifford never married. Clifford began working for The Gartland Haswell Foundry Company in Sidney in 1939 and worked there until after World War Two.

    

John Daniel May, died May 10, 1939 in Lawrence County, TN. His wife, America Tennessee “Tennie” Martin May sold their farm in Tennessee and she and her sons, Malcolm Albert “Pat” and Clyde Franklin moved to Shelby County, Ohio and joined Alvin and Clifford. Tennie died on August 26, 1964 and was buried in the May Cemetery in Lawrence County, Tennessee along side of her husband.

    

Malcom Albert “Pat” was born on April 25, 1909. He never married. Pat died December 27, 1972 and was buried in the May Cemetery in Lawrence County, Tennessee. Pat worked for Alvin his brother, The Gartland Haswell Foundry Company, The Wagner Manufacturing Company and the Ohio State Highway Garage. Pat may have stayed with his brother Elbert Floyd in Massillon, Ohio for a short period of time.

 

     Clyde Franklin married Mildred Pauline Coverstone on March 7, 1942. Soon after he moved to Shelby County, Ohio Clyde was employed by The Sidney Grain Machinery Company. He left Sidney Grain Machinery and went to Shelby Manufacturing Company worked there until he retired. Clyde died on May 28, 1998 and was buried in the Cedar Point Cemetery in Pasco, Ohio.
