Talmage Mallaugh
Clayton told me about his famous Great Great Grandpa, "Flat River" Clayton
who was a personal
friend of Davy Crockett (August 17, 1786 – March 6, 1836). Talmage told that family folklore said Flat River may have
helped Davy start his businesses along Shoal creek west of
Lawrenceburg and lost a great deal of money when the flood
in 1821 wiped out Davy's businesses.
He
was another reason
that Flat River was famous was that he was always in trouble
never missed a chance for a good fight.
Talmage (my grandpa) showed me a letter from Stephen Hardy
that talked about Flat River. I remember it was old, faded
and very little of it could be read. It mentioned Flat Rivers
20 some children. |
Rachel Crews on Oct. 21, 1793. His 2nd marriage was to Nancy
Blackard on Sept. 18, 1821. |

River Clayton born c. 1770 NC, died 1860 Lawrence County TN
90 Years old (1860 US Census) Roxboro boy. Flat River went
to the Flat River Primitive Baptist Church. First wife
Rachel Crews died. He got in a scrap and married Nancy
Blackard. Left Roxboro for Lawrence County, Tennessee.
Hunted Bears with Davy Crockett. Had Clayton family number
two north of Crewstown. Died 1860, buried Old Flippo
Cemetary, which was bought by a cattle rancher from Florida
took Flat River's fence down and started bush hogging
stones. His father, Thomas Clayton, died on a business trip
in Edenton, North Carolina. He was a Roxboro boy, maybe
selling twist tobacco. I don't know where the grave is in
Edenton, North Carolina. Looks like a 200 mile trip. Long
way to sell tobacco to ships from a wagon. William (Flat
River) Clayton is a descendant from the Claytons of
Tidewater Virginia. I believe he is Daniel Clayton's
grandson. Source: Robin Clayton Email 18 Dec 2012 (ntrs@dixie-net.com). |
